Immersion has been shown to be the most effective way to learn a foreign language, even for children. As a result, we provide a high quality immersion environment with sufficient hours to enable a child without language support at home to develop the foundation to becoming bilingual. Even a child without prior exposure to the language will become comfortable in an immersion environment through our use of gestures, context clues and visual support. The result is that students feel safe and comfortable challenging themselves using the language. Language is used as a medium for learning subject content such as math and science or PE and fine arts. Through this process students are also able to think abstractly, creatively and focus selectively – all a result of the process of learning two languages simultaneously.

Diversity as Normal as Speaking Chinese

NY Times
By MICHAEL WINERIP
Published: October 7, 2007

SUMMIT, N.J. At the ripe old age of 3, Sidney Kinsale is in her second year of learning two foreign languages. She attends a preschool here on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays where she learns Chinese. Then on Fridays, she goes to a second preschool in Scotch Plains where she learns Spanish.

“I’m not sure she’ll totally get it all,” says her mother, Carlene, whose college degree is in early childhood studies. “But our hope is she’ll have a love for language and continue Mandarin and Spanish until she’s fluent.”

The Kinsales are not alone. The Mandarin preschool here, Bilingual Buds, has grown to 110 students from 10 in three years.

Non-Asians Show a Growing Interest in Chinese Courses

NY Times
Published: November 29, 2006

SAN FRANCISCO — With its booming economy and aspirations to expand its global influence, China may have achieved a victory in American classrooms.

Take the private Chinese-American International School here, which runs from prekindergarten through eighth grade and offers instruction in all subjects — from math to music — half in Mandarin and half in English. The curriculum also includes Chinese history, culture and language studies, and in the 25 years since the school was founded, it has attracted mainly Asian-American children. But in the past few years, it has seen rapid growth in the enrollment of non-Asians.

Parents Take Language Class Into Their Own Hands

NY Times
By WINNIE HU
Published: September 30, 2006

LIVINGSTON, N.J. — In the back of an Armenian church here, 2- and 3-year-olds sing along to the classic nursery tune “Frère Jacques” — but this version is in Mandarin Chinese: Ni hao ma, Ni hao ma, Wo hen hao, Wo hen hao (“How are you? I’m very well.”). Afterward, they practice counting and snack on bananas, all without speaking English.

Five days a week, these toddlers attend Bilingual Buds, a Chinese-immersion preschool, where neatly printed Chinese labels are posted on everything from class bulletin boards to the bathroom sink so that parents can understand basic words.

Our teachers are native speakers with backgrounds in early childhood and second language acquisition.

Teacher Xu – Ms. Xu was most recently the full time teacher in Delaware’s H.O. Brittingham Elementary School where she taught Mandarin daily to approximately 120 K-5th graders. Prior to that has also been involved in coaching high students on the Chinese AP test, and well as a language arts teacher at a private school in Hong Kong. Ms. Xu loves young children and has recently relocated to Manhattan.

Teacher Hao – Ms. Hao, currently a head teacher for Bilingual Buds in Summit, has an MA in Asian Studies specializing in teaching Mandarin as a second language from Seton Hall University in NJ. Prior to this, she tutored students for 5 years, and taught at various heritage programs in NJ. A native of Beijing, Ms. Hao volunteered for the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games.

Founder and Directors

Sharon Huang is the Director and Founder of Bilingual Buds. She founded this school in February 2005 because she wanted an immersion environment with enough meaningful exposure for her sons to learn Mandarin in a fun, natural way. Previously Sharon worked in the corporate world for 15 + years including at Nabisco in various brand management positions and in senior director positions at AirTouch Cellular and Weightwatchers.com. By consulting with various experts in the field of second language acquisition and drawing upon best practices from various methodologies, Sharon developed the curriculum currently in use at the school. Sharon received her undergraduate degree in chemical engineering from UC Berkeley, and an MBA from University of Pennsylvania’s Wharton School. Sharon was born in the United States, a daughter of immigrant Taiwanese parents. Sharon is married and has twin 6 year old sons who are enrolled in their fourth consecutive year at Bilingual Buds.

Carina Bellmann is the Director for Early Childhood Curriculum. Her responsibilities include acting as a key contact point for parents and overseeing our bilingual curriculum from an early childhood standpoint. Carina comes to Bilingual Buds most recently from Sundance School where she was acting curriculum coordinator (K-3). She has an advanced degree in Elementary Education from Middlebury College and is bicultural and bilingual as she is a dual citizen of Gemany and the United States.

Children 2-6 are immersed in Mandarin while receiving a rich early childhood program where they develop strong cognitive, fine & gross motor, social-emotional, and linguistic skills.

Our Mandarin language goals are to develop receptive skills and speaking ability. Children will intuitively gain an understanding of basic sentence structures and will learn to decode meaning from context clues. We use weekly themes such as family, school, and our bodies to build vocabulary. Both informal and formal assessments are made to support student progress.

Note: The winter start date for the preschool is TBD as we are awaiting final regulatory approval for this program by the city of New York. There will be two program options for the academic term beginning Winter, 2010 to June 24, 2010. These classes will be offered for the September 2010- June 2011 academic year too except where noted.
